before i write anything i say out loud what i think the question is actually about. like 'ok this looks like a ranking thing, probably want ROW_NUMBER or RANK depending on how ties work.' takes maybe 20 seconds. i started doing it because i kept panicking and just writing whatever came first. saying it out loud forces me to actually think before typing. also interviewers seem to like it? idk, got some positive feedback from the last one

typing silently for 8 minutes is the worst thing you can do. i don't care what you produce at the end, i need to hear you think

i ask 'is this testing the ranking or aggregation part' and they almost always just tell me. feels like cheating but apparently it's good
