Hello Datadrivers, I am hearing a lot about GitLab's good gig culture and emphasis on wlb. It is a bit hectic for me at Google. So, I am planning to prepare and move to some shop which really cares for the employee. I don't see much information regarding Data Engineering interview process or compensation in dd for any big organizations. Hope someone give some guidance through this thread and it will help me prepare and also will be useful for other people who are hunting for similiar information.

  1. What is Interview process at GitLab for Data Engineers?
  2. How many coding stages on DS and Algo , what is the level of difficulty?
  3. How much focus on System design? Is it going to be regular system design used for SDE or there is a separate process for Data Engineers where they ask for designing Dimensional modelling / Data modelling problems. Eg( Design a datawate house for Airbnb, bookmyshow, etc.)
  4. Are there any sql specific stages?
  5. What is the compensation for P4 and P5 level?

Mandatory info:
Current position : Data Engineer 2 at Google Hyderabad
Yoe : 8.5
TC : 48 (in my 2nd year at Google)

People who have given interviews but rejected or got offers but didn't join, please comment regarding your experience on the thread.

I am planning to earn few more posts on datadriven which is similiar to this to bring more info for the community. I have observed, there are plenty of discord servers for sde to share information among them. I didnt see anything such for Data engineers. I will also attempt to make a group for DE in couple of days. I will add the links to this post later.

I've given DE interview at GitLab, TBH it was relatively simple. Two managerial rounds, and I had two tech stages.

This was for an SDE 2 equivalent DE job

Mostly SQL queries, query optimization, data warehouse design, some roughly big data technologies like Spark and Kafka. East-medium Python and SQL programming problems. You should also try to get info on individual stages from the recruiter
